For anyone who doesn't know, a shipper is a term applied to a person who likes a relationship or potential relationship between two characters Depending on what show you pick and the characters you like your choices may end up being disapointing or satidfying, AKA my dissapointment with Voyager with the Chakotay/Seven relationship when I wanted a Janeway/Chakotay one. Anyway is it just me or is anyone else seeing the possibilities for the relationship between Roslin and Adama to evolve? I think they could do something really interesting with the two characters.

Yay another person who shares my tastes ;D There was actually a couple of articles on about.com where they interviewed Mary and Edward about their characters and exploration of their relationship may just happen. **fingers crossed**

Spoiler for Kobol's last gleaming here below.... ....................................be warned............................. You have great taste, I loved the whole Janeway/Chakotay thing after new earth i thought it was inevitable for them to get together then what happens in the space of one episode he was going out with seven......... you should check out www.JetC.net and read the fan fic on janeway chakotay............ I am also a great Sam/Jack shipper Stargate SG1 was a Picard/Crusher shipper back in the day............. I think the whole Roslin/Will Adama thing has great potential and would make excellent viewing to say the least expecially given her ill ness and all be interesting to see how he takes it when she gets around to telling him............................. i hope he survives the injury he receives in kobol's Last gleaming part one or else this discussion is academic................. I am seriously thinking about writing the script and sending it to them just to see if they use it............. Nice to meet you (you have great taste brill) AJ

I would think that there's enough ACTUAL sex on this show to stave off the "shipper" stuff (which strikes me as 1) being pretty much softcore emotional pr0n using tv characters, written by and for girlies)! ;D

Besides, ONLY in fiction would any male be able to stand that voice of Janeway's while in the throes of passion....she sounds like a chinese house cat when she talks...I can only imagine....ick, no I can't Remember that guy who went into seizures at the sound of Mary Hart's voice? Well, that what Janeway's does to me...only less pleasant.

************POSSIBLE SPOLIER AHEAD*********** I would think that there's enough ACTUAL sex on this show to stave off the "shipper" stuff (which strikes me as 1) being pretty much softcore emotional pr0n using tv characters, written by and for girlies)! ;D Hush your mouth child!! "By and for girlies". I beg your pardon! I'm a man and was always hoping that there would be something between Janeway/Chakotay and Sam/Jack. As for BSG, I think it's to tense for something like that to happen just yet. Boomer/Tyrol ain't gonna happen, bcause they were already together. Boomer/Helo would be more convincing, with him falling for her, cos we all know she's in love with him now. Adama Snr./Roslin possible only next series, cos he's still trying to cope with the loss of his wife. Lee/Kara?? Not sure he's gonna go after his brothers ex. Matt

I always had a thing for the authority type. Whoops, I said too much

I'm not saying that men don't think "oh, x and y should hook up, i want to see that on screen," clearly yes.
But I think that spending more than idle energy thinking about the sex that two fictional characters should be having (but aren't) is an activity that women are more likely to participate in, possibly because they are more likely to want a sense of emotional connectedness to come with their porn. And then it's very frilly porn to boot, or so it seems to me.
I speak from the perspective of one who has actually had to read various fan-produced porn/slash/shipper fanfic in a class on pop culture. Constance Penley (a professor of literature and film at SUNY Rochester) has written lots of interesting critical essays on the genre and its authors. Aside from the basic cultural anthropological interest, it's not so much great erotica.
Kind of like the porn films directed by women (the Veronica Hart and Vivid films in particular). They're all full of people being neurotic and emotionally overwrought and high strung, who have to be comforted and nurtured before they can have nicely-lit slow sex on satin sheets with Muzak playing in the background. Porn made by men tends to get right to the sex, and to be more playful and crazy (Spice Channel stuff) or unapologetically direct and fetishistic. Also, lots of wa-wa pedal guitar. Chika-chika-MOW MOW etc. Totally unrestrained and not at all repressed. Those Vivid movies have got to be the most BORING porn ever made.
The Kinsey Institute is here at IU Bloomington where I am, and last year I went to this great multimedia talk on porn made during the silent screen era, and it was FANTASTIC! It didn't take itself so seriously, so it was funny and sexy. Also, flappers knew how to party.
Shipper stuff IMO all reads like softcore porn written by 15 year old girls, involving lots of insecurity and eventual fulfillment of an extremely vague nature involving "things". But I'm just a jaded tart.

I'm a Kara/Gaius if only for the random tension-relieving sex opportunities. Not much relationship potential there but could be fun on-screen. I don't like Kara/Lee because there's too much of the ick factor with the 'hmm, Zak used to like that too' thing. And also because they'd end up killing each other. Opposites attract but like forces detonate.;D Rosalin/Adama? Hmmmm... jury's out on that one. Could throw an interesting dimension to things but at the same time I don't really see the Old Man as the romancing sort. Might be better to leave things platonic. Then again, maybe I should pretend I'm not a shipper for anyone because shippers are normally followed in fanfiction terms by the inevitable rise of the Mary Sue for any excess male characters. *runs screaming*

Or are slashers just homo encounters? First I ever heard of it was on the SciFi boards. The SG-1 boards are full of people writing Daniel/Jack encounters. YUCK!!
