i looked, i really did. but now im feeling lazy and since the fate of New York isnt hanging in the ballance, i think you should just tell me. my stepdad guessed the first 4. i would think anyone born before July 4, 1776, which would be the first 7. Yep, you got it! All the Presidents prior to Martin van Buren were born in the American colonies, NOT the United States of America. As for the four/seven thing, I must extend my apologies for the mistake. I must have typed that during one of my brain's coffee breaks, because you're absolutely right; there were seven, not four! "You've got to admit, John Quincy Adams was pretty forgettable..."

For all you in the US, the downloading of this series is being monitored, I know a number of people who have got letters from their ISP regarding the illegal downloading of the episodes. Just thought you'd like to know. Be careful or get clobbered

Just thought you'd like to know. Be careful or get clobberedWait a sec - I was under the impression that downloading TV torrents was NOT illegal. I was told (wrongly?) that it is like videotaping or TIVOing a television show, which is not illegal as long as you don't try to profit from that recording. I'm on the phone with someone who is trying to tell me that it's like stealing cable, though. Hm. Hm. I have to admit that I'd be amazed if my IP cracked down on it. I live in a university town, and if file-sharing was eliminated it would lose its entire super high speed DSL market. We're not paying for 100 Mbps to play Scrabble on Yahoo games. It'll be too bad if media industries can eliminate file sharing instead of having to learn to compete with it. I'm liking this whole on-demand thing. xo, S.

Just use Peerguardian or one of the similar programs, it won't illiminate your risk, but will greatly reduce it.

Sorry for bringing up such an old topic, but I´m digging through old topics to see what I missed.
I can´t help but notice that there is a very positive effect of downloading episodes that is not often mentioned.
If someone downloads a series which hasn´t been aired before in his country (and therefore has to build its own, new market from ground up) and starts to like it and tells everybody about this cool new thing he just watched, it might help to provide an interested base of viewers who heard something, maybe watched an episode or two, and so on.
I know about at least half a dozen people who downloaded Galactica (which will not air where I live for a couple of months) and now start to spread the word about it, how cool it is, and so on. A lot of people already said they´d definitely watch it when it airs based on those statements alone, so there may be a solid fanbase that will tune in right from the very first episode.
A lot of US series have been renewed for more seasons based on foreign market success alone. Who knows, maybe Galactica might profit somewhere down the road from a market that starts out with a solid base of viewers right from the beginning.

You are right downloading is not illegal; however, Bittorrents cannot work unless there is an upload source. The more completed files the faster the download, that is why you are asked to share your completed file. Only uploading will get you in trouble with your ISP not downloading. Once you share 100% of your completed file you are comitting a crime... Therefore, never share more than 50%.

If your worried about the torrents. Try usenet. Get a decent provider (30-50 days retention), and Xnews, Agent, or Newsbin. Search for a group with the name binaries and scifi in it, and you'll find a lot of the eps. in different formats. I grabbed some DVD's made by a group called "Stone Cutters" from the UK releases. They'll tide me over till the commerical release here in the US.
The guy who made them even put a line asking people to purchase it when it came out, where the "warning" used to appear".
If you download, just make sure you watch the epsiodes when they air to help the ratings. ;D

Downloading is freedom. And freedom is what we need right now. People must be able to decide for themselves what they download and what not. Support freedom. Support me... oups, sorry, I was in full election mode...

I think if I had BSG recorded in the full glory of HD, then I wouldn't watch anything else on TV!

I want to convert some BSG avi's I DLed to mpeg (VCD/SVCD). Any suggestions what to use both in terms of quality and speed? I have tMPGEnc which is great quality but really fattens up the file and takes a loooong time. I want to fit one episode on a CD as I have a bunch to get ride of but if I have to I will put them on DVD's.

Ok, I downloaded all the episodes in HDTV format... and IMO, downloading TV is not theft... I could just have easily have had a cousin in britland send me video tape. I've just substituted my computer for my vcr.
Now, Dear Mr. Moore. Internet 'piracy' on tv (which I've already stated my opinion on), especially in the case of BSG is a result of the release of the series in different places at different times. Obviously coordinating international release of a tv series is a complicated matter... but one cannot blame the viewers for wanting to watch the show. ESPECIALLY when there are boards like this, where an international group of people are discussing the show, where some have seen it, and some haven't.
I understand the negative affects this has on media, and could potentially have on the series. But, I've had wait a while for the mini series to generate a full blown series, then I found out I had to wait even longer... that's BS. ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU LIVE IN THE COUNTRY WHERE THE BLOODY SHOW IS FILMED.
Now here is the solution to the whole issue of internet download of TV episodes. GET YOU ACT TOGETHER!!!!!!! The issue of internet piracy has come to the forfront because it is the entertainment business who cannot keep up with the internet. It's heavy competition, I understand that. But the entertaiment business has to step up, and offer more than the internet has to offer. That means, you have to get all your shows out at the same time, so that people in England aren't 20 episodes ahead of people in Canada etc. Downloading always seems to be a 'sin' attributed to the audience/downloader, but in truth, it's the failure of the production company to distribute it's product properly. It's simple business. One makes a product, but if you don't get it to the market fast enough, then it will find another way(the internet) in order to fill the demand. God it's so simple, one wonders WHY THE TVE BUSINESS HASN'T FIGURED THIS OUT YET.
You generated the demand, but your distribution system really suck donkey nuts, that's not the audiences fault, it's yours, Thank you
