A letter from Ronald D. Moore and David Eick
It's come to our attention that many of you out there are so eager to see our show that you've decided to jump the line and get the episodes via the internet ahead of everyone patiently waiting in the US and Canada for the show to premiere in January. First of all, we're flattered and happy that you're so excited to see the new season of Battlestar Galactica and appreciate the support. However, beyond the fact that getting episodes over the internet is illegal it's also potentially very damaging to the show itself. You see, we need RATINGS which means we need eyeballs in front of TV screens that advertisers can measure. The more episodes get downloaded and digitally copied and passed along and copied again and passed along and copied yet again and passed along yet again, it creates a dangerous situation where a lot of people are watching and enjoying Galactica, but not seeing it when it counts -- namely on the air.
Please understand that in order to get picked up for a second season, we need good ratings in January, not silent, uncounted viewing in November. The more you copy the show and pass it along to your friends now, the more it potentially impacts our total audience in January. So while we admire your resourcefulness and appreciate your appetite for Galactica, we implore you to please refrain from downloading the episodes or sharing them in any way.
Thank you. Ronald D. Moore & David Eick Executive Producers

I'm not sure if it will make any difference at all, the second half of Stargte SG-1 is aired here in the UK an month before Sci-fi air it in the US. It does not seem to have any effect on the viewing figures whatsoever.

Hopefully this will lead to some changes in the SciFi scheduling practices.
There is absolutely no good reason for BSG and SG:A to trail smaller markets by a period of months!
Whoever is sticking to this plan at SFC needs to be fired!

Whoever is sticking to this plan at SFC needs to be fired! SG-1 and SG:A are normally 2 months in front of Sky at the beginning of teh season, but for some daft reason Scifi have a 3 month break in the middle, whereas Sky continue broadcasting the whole thing in one go.

The issue raised here, is over legality. I'm not so sure that the DMCA covers TV show episodes. My question would be, what's the difference with DVR's? What would the difference be if I used VHS to tape the episode and then shared the tape with all of my friends?
Answer: There is no difference, and as long as TV is available in a Public medium, I believe that it is fair game. EVEN under the DMCA( which is a load of crap IMHO).
Seriously, if you want to point fingers and complain...then it should have been aired in the UK and the US at the SAME TIME.
In all honesty, as soon as I can get my hands on the mini-series DVD's, I'll buy them. I'll also buy the series DVD's once they are available. I'm doing the same thing for Enterprise. I think highly of both series and Would gladly pay money to help in merchandise sales and ratings as it were.

Just to clarify: The post in this particular case is more to do with "eyeballs watching screens" than legality/piracy. Normally, US series are shown before anywhere else gets them. However this isn't an issue for American networks, as they use their own domestic ratings to decide whether a show is successful. The problem is that because we got it first, this time it's Americans who are downloading - and the producers are worried this will affect the American ratings. With analogue VCRs the quality of the each copy degrades - this isn't the case with digital copies. Perversely, it's easier to share a perfect digital copy with (potentially) millions using Kazaa than it is to copy an inferior VHS tape & share it with your mates.

I'm in the US and I'm downloading the eps the same day they air (because of the time dfference, I can watch them before I go to bed that night)
That said, I'm still going to watch the show when it airs here simply because with the PAL to NTSC conversion, the shows are slightly faster and the voices are pitched slightly higher. It's kinda annoying at times.
I just re-watched the mini series again (which was sourced from Sci Fi channel) and the voices were "normal" and it made a definite difference.
So I'll watch them all again when they air. I hope all the other downloaders will do the same. Even though it aired first on Sky One, there is still US money tied into the production, and I'm sure they're going to be very irritated if nobody watches the thing over here.
