Here's the thing with people making the affirmative action comparison(they don't point out that Sharon is Asian etc.).
They don't have to tell you Sharon is Asian because you can already see she's Asian.
Race and sexuality are two different things. You can't compare the two(ahem! Media Blvd).
I'm not gay, but I understand their argument. They want to feel included in the series too. There's alot of making out and love stories etc., but all of them are Hetero centered.
No one says that Gaius fucking Starbuck is shown to "make a point" about Hetero banging. So, really, why would we act differently in the reverse?
I think most people are reasonable about this. Don't warn me, make it a suprise etc. That's cool.

After reading this and another bulletin boards thread I've gathered a kind of consensus on this subject; a series of comments and themes which re-appear in posts...... 1) The writers shouldnt include 'social issues' or in this case 'gay characters' just for dramatic content; it should not be a 'social issue of the week' series. 2) The Colonials might treat homosexuality as 'no big deal' and a casual reference might communicate this concept to the viewers. 3) The Colonials might have residual prejudices that over time might become exagerated and problematic. 4) The Colonials might have ingrained and substantial prejudices resulting in immediate and murderous injustice; as in 'throw them out the airlock' type actions. 5) The issue should not be included at all, nor should any issue or images of human sexuality be included in the series. 6) Images and issues surrounding heterosexual relationships are welcome both for dramatic content and/or graphic sensual appreciation. 7) Gay people are trying to push their 'agenda' on the show by insisting on representation in the series. 8) Presumably heterosexual males are expressing disgust at the concept of seeing men kissing. (that last one is making me laugh my ass off..sorry it just seems so adolescent) 9) Oh,,, and a number of women seem more than wiling to see Jamie Bamber kiss another guy...... Did I miss one? This topic has been fun to watch evolve in the internet community.... Especially considering that the people on these boards represent an international community; from rural middle America, to urban U.S. , to Canada, South America, Britain and the Phillipines! Amazing......

No one says that Gaius fracking Starbuck is shown to "make a point" about Hetero banging. So, really, why would we act differently in the reverse? I think most people are reasonable about this. Don't warn me, make it a suprise etc. That's cool. I wish you where right, but i dont think so, i think a lot of people are very unreasonable about this. Call me cynical but i think all the sex in the show so far have been there for its porno value, people watching it goes ooh, ahh, nudge nudge, know what i mean, know what i mean. But if it would have been Lee and Tyrol soaked in sweat, Tyrol screaming out "Crashdown" as he came. People watching it would go "WHAT THE FRAK! " and then call the sci fi channel to complain. It should be that if we can have one we can have the other, but the fact that we are discussing it proves to me that that isnt the case. PS i dont mean to preach, i might sound more serious then i am, so do argue against me if you have another opinion. Its whats forums are for

TEXT I have to say that I would pay money as well. What is it with when two people love eachother and it is shown on television it is a bad thing. I feel that if it is shown in a passing way withouth it being flashed like was said before by someone else (major social comment) it could be done. Indeed the fact that we are discussing it means that there are still problems with it culturally. W 39 posts ....

8) Presumably heterosexual males are expressing disgust at the concept of seeing men kissing. (that last one is making me laugh my ass off..sorry it just seems so adolescent) Agreed! And, even funnier, whilst those same 'presumably heterosexual males' are gacking up their tonsils at the thought of men kissing, they're also saying 'but a Boomer/Six/Kara tonguefest would be fine...' Double standards much? ;D

OK, i personally prefer pure sci-fi to sci-fi with American social issues thrown in, but since we're going there, here's my nickel's worth. i don't care what people do with their genitalia. If you want to make a social issue out of your genital preference akin to the Civil Rights Movement, go on ahead. i personally don't think a person is less qualified for a job or is a second-class citizen just because s/he is gay; and, outside of the military (which, i'm sure, wasn't conceived of as a social testing ground) and the Klan, i don't think anybody else does. Sorry to all homosexuals if heteros are grossed out by some homosexual activity--it's not something we do on purpose, it's just our natural reaction. It would make an interesting story, but in a different context than what is going on in the States at present; to wit, there is no threat of the extinction of the species in the U.S. If Moore does tackle this issue, i'm sure it will be a situation that will jibe perfectly with the political correctness prevalent in the U.S. In other words, any gay character(s) will be accepted by everyone except a few male characters, who will be marginalized and eventually brought around to accepting the gay character(s). Not saying this is good, bad or otherwise; it's just the way it has to be treated. If Moore does attempt this, here's a few more suggestions for U.S.-type issues he can take on: Abortion Assisted suicide Enemy sympathizers Disagreement with the war Drug abuse Health care for seniors Incarceration of minors and non-violent, non-habitual offenders Low education standards The death penalty ...gee, i think i liked it better when they were just shooting down Cylon raiders... And, even funnier, whilst those same 'presumably heterosexual males' are gacking up their tonsils at the thought of men kissing, they're also saying 'but a Boomer/Six/Kara tonguefest would be fine...' Double standards much? ;D Yep, that's me.;D Double standard? You betcha!

Im American....I attend church on a regular basis.....I AM NOT HOMOPHOBIC!! /rant off
I think an OPENLY gay character would ruin the show but the UST between Gaeida and Baltar adds an interesting edge. In reality that kind of behavior probably would not be too tolerated in a society that's try to reproduce.

*climbs onto soap box*
Look, if they're going to do it on the show, they're going to do it on the show. If they're NOT going to do it on the show, they're not going to do it on the show. Either way, if we're really fans we're going to handle it like grown ups, or if not then we're going to go off in a sulk and start moaning about the show getting too political, yada yada. I think that's up to the individual conscience, myself.
*gets down off soap box*
PS, Wyvar: 'nudge nudge, know what I mean?' I think there might be a Monty Python fan in the house... ;D

some gays say the same thing about hetero sex (though not me). It hasn't kept tv execs from putting it all over the tv screen. I suppose that it's because str8 sex PROBABLY shows at least ONE of the two on the screen that one can obsess over. Straight sex is an obvious "compromise."
