Hey! Just noticed that in the intro to the series there is a logo (just as the drums stop) that say BSG 75 at the bottom. Anyone know why? i must have missed the explanation. Is it the 75th battlestar in the fleet? or something? They said it was one of the original 12 in the mini series. Really sorry if this is painfully obvious

Like yourself, I'm thinking it's the 75th version of the Battlestar group of ships. I'm sure someone will say neah to this

There was a thread on SciFi on this a while back, but nobody really knows the answer; that is the logical thing it would mean, but I betcha there's some inside-joke relevence to it that we might never know as well...

I believe it to be an inside joke of some type... though if it were, why not "BSG 78"? 78 being the year when the original BSG first aired.

Could it be that Glen A. Larson originally wrote BG in 1975, but it didn't air 'til 1978?
Can anyone shead light on this thought, please?

Could it be that Glen A. Larson originally wrote BG in 1975, but it didn't air 'til 1978? Can anyone shead light on this thought, please? Larson tried to pitch the series for some time. BG wasn't the original premise. Adam's Ark was. The idea is the end of the world is near and the most brilliant people meet a Howard Hughs like characater and the building they are in lifts off, ie it is a spaceship. When Star Wars came out, Larson decided to pick up on the concept. Instead of Death Star we had Battlestar. BG had it's day in court and WON as being unique in it's own right. The only surviving idea of Adam's Ark was ADAMA a combination of the title.

Here's a short synopsis of the case that I found on the BBC site today (the entire article can be found here - www.bbc.co.uk/films/2000/11/01/star_wars_v_galatica_article.shtml ) - "But by far the most notorious case of alleged rip-off is "Battlestar Galactica", which was accused of borrowing a little too much from "Star Wars" and saw its makers taken to court. Both are space operas with dogfights but the similarities were said to be much deeper. For example, the original script drafts of "Galactica" had a character named Skyler, not too far away from Skywalker in "Star Wars". Also the original title for "Battlestar Galactica" was "Star Worlds", with the pilot airing under the episode title of "Saga of a Star World", despite the plot being about 12 planets and one warship. "Galactica" creator Glen A Larson claimed that his show was in the works long before "Star Wars". Significantly, Larson also says he met up with "Star Wars" producer Gary Kurtz: "I agreed not to use certain effects including laser streaks from our guns... I always consider [the case] very unfair because we had met... and they were in agreement not to take any action." Fox sued in June 1978, citing 34 similarites between the properties. George Lucas said that he wouldn't take part in the suit. This gave Larson plenty to shout about until Lucas responded in print that he wasn't sueing because he couldn't sue - Fox owned the rights being sued for, not him. The case was decided in favour of "Battlestar Galactica" on 22 August 1980 - by which time the original "Battlestar Galactica" had been cancelled and cinemas were looking forward to "The Empire Strikes Back"."

I think the BSG-75 was simply meant to look like something you would see on a modern day warship....like with Nuclear Aircraft Carriers, you would see CVN-69 or something like that. According to the mini-series, there have to be at least 120 battlestars....it is quite possible that the Galactica is the 75th ship of the battlestar class. Respectfully, Martok2112

And upon writing this, i realize that according to Mr. Darol, (Cylon Agent in Waiting) at the beginning of the mini, he stated that originally there were 12 battlestars, one representing each of the colonies. Galactica represented Caprica, so now, I find myself equally confuzzled as to the designation of the ship. Martok2112

Respectfully, Martok2112 Ironic that you chose that number.... I served on board the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower ( CVN-69). I also served on the USS George Washington (CVN-73) CVN-75 is the Harry S. Truman

In the mini, I remember a line where it was stated that 30 Battlestars were destroyed in the first attack on the Colonies. I know that doesn't come close to the magic number of "75" that we are looking for. Consider the age of the Galactica and that she was being put out to pasture, who knows how many Battlestars existed in TNS at the time the Colonies were attacked... Best, Bryan

Howdy, Bryan,
Actually, in my initial post, I did speculate that when it was mentioned that a quarter of the fleet was destroyed, it would put the number of serving battlestars at about 120...so it is possible that the Galactica may be the seventy-fifth ship of her class. But that is a good point you brought up.
Many thanks, Respectfully, Martok2112
