Which makes for a really interesting concept. The alleged backstory for the battlestars is that they weren't built until the cylon rebellion got started. If Galactica is the 75th ship of her classification, it makes for some interesting history - especially if the first 12 battlestars werent' built until the first cylon war.
Supposedly, Zoic was told that 5 battlestars were built at the start of the war, followed by 7 more battlestars.
What then, were the 70+ ships that preceded Galactica? Cause this Galactica is one of the original 12 battlestars.
Did the BS originally mean baseship? Did the cylon basestars originally have BS designations? Or was there a different evolutionary tree of warships separate from cylon tech, that eventually evolved into the Battlestars?
The colonials had to have had something that preceded the battlestars - or they would have been totally defeated by the cylons. They had to have some ships with decent firepower (even if vulnerable and over-networked) that could fight cylons until new, improved warships were completed (Battlestars). We don't know if Galactica was the 1st or 5th true Battlestar. If they have built 120 battlestars since then, then the BS designation could be up to BSG-195.
I'm just throwing that number out for speculation. We assume there are 120 battlestars due to inference and other sources. I also like to believe they have 120. But, I acknowledge a point made by others, they haven't explicity stated 120 battlestars.
My best guess is that a large baseship/battleship or dreadnaught preceded the battlestars. And that these ships were separate from the line of cylon baseships.
Fun to speculate. More fun to watch the series.
I also agree that the naming BSG-75 is part metaphor, to give a sense of familiarity. It might be nothing more than that.
Actually, in my initial post, I did speculate that when it was mentioned that a quarter of the fleet was destroyed, it would put the number of serving battlestars at about 120...so it is possible that the Galactica may be the seventy-fifth ship of her class. But that is a good point you brought up.
Many thanks,
