Please... for all of you BSG/Ronald Moore fans...

DEEP SPACE NINE
(I don't call it Trek because I feel thats an insult)
is the INSPIRATION OF RON'S BATTLESTAR GALACTICA!!!
Ron wrote beautiful peices of Television on that show and if it wasn't for his experience at DS9 there WOULD BE NO BATTLESTAR!!!!

If you've admired Ron's BattleStarGalactica for its edge and social/political relevance then by all means spend NOW till JANUARY watching Ron Moore's first creation: DS9 (7 seasons)

BEFORE RON REMADE BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, HE DID THIS:
You will not be dissapointed. DS9 is no escapist/alien of the week show... This is THE ONLY SHOW TO DEAL WITH WAR & TERRORISM SERIOUSLY (as seriously as late 90's TV can get) IN ALL OF TELEVISION HISTORY.
(Maybe BSG might top it... wait and see...)

LONG BEFORE 911 & IRAQ, Ira Behr/Hans Beimler and Ron Moore started with the premise that the planet of Bajor was recently freed from a foreign occupation and the DS9 crew were essentially UN Observers, mediating the transition from OCCUPATION to ANARCHY to CIVIL RULE. Along the way a WORLD WAR breaks out...

In between, we have episodes dealing with wars over resources, the weapons trade, the ethics of terrorism/war and espionage.... and yes... normal one to one human issues: Honour, Love and Loyalty.

THE RELEVANCE TO BATTLESTAR?

Ron and the DS9 writers felt that the show had potential to expand farther than it actually went but they were tied down by Paramount Conservative Execs and Trek Franchise honcho Rick Berman.

Ron, in his interviews, always bemoaned the fact that very few people would actually discover the great writing on the series due to the TREK stigma.

When the show ended he applauded the risks he and the writers took.
He predicted that SCI FI COULD NOT SURVIVE(ahem!... would ENTERPRISE please take a bow) if it did not end idiotic formulaic stories.

Then, a few months later SCI FI Channel came calling... and the REINCARNATION OF DS9 was created in Ron's BattleStarGalactica.

CONCLUSION:
Many of you are probably spending nights searching google frantically for interviews.... resisting the temptation to read spoilers... and flat out worrying that the show might have a hard road ahead.

I submit to you, that instead of expending effort.... Relax.
Download Rent Buy(its way worth it!) DS9 seasons 1-7 and watch Ron Moores work there.

Then...
Witness NOT the debut of a new show in January, but a reincarnation.
You will see that DS9 and BSG are side by side in revolutionizing the medium of Television...

the one is inseperable from the other.

This is just weird... The similarities just keep popping up:
I always suspected parallel's between characters...

Sisquo: Adama
Kira: Starbuck
O'Brian: Tyrol
Quark: Tigh

But this is just weird... Doesn't Baltar look alot like Bashir?

What did Ron D. Moore think of his time on DS9?
He told DreamWatch Magazine:

Do you ever miss working on STAR TREK ?

Moore : Oh sure. I really miss working on DEEP SPACE NINE - I miss the writing staff that I worked with. There was an intense sense of camaraderie. I really enjoyed working with that staff, and I enjoyed working with Ira Behr. I learned a lot from him. I liked the fact that our internal mandate on DEEP SPACE NINE was to challange everything that was STAR TREK and push the boundaries and continually find ways to reinvent the show or to do something different. It was a very challenging and interesting environment. I miss that and I miss those characters.

For those of you wondering who Ira Behr is... consider him the RDM on DS9. He ran DS9 and continually fought Paramount Studios, Rick Berman, and all those conservative Trekkies, to make quality stories.
If you're a Sci-Fi fan, in general, google: Ira Behr+interview. He's got alot of interesting things to say about SCi-FI, writing, life etc.

And who might those characters be? Let's just say that DS9 had the cream of the crop, in terms of actors. I'm guessing Dukat, Weyoun, Kira... OH WHAT THE HELL!!... They were all memorable.

P.S. Ira and the key writers on DS9 wrote and produced 'The 4400'.
I haven't seen it yet (Canadian), so i can't recommend it in the same way I recommended DS9 and BSG. But do check it out and post your thoughts on whether it lives up to the DS9/BSG standard.

Umm... Quark is like Tigh?

I fail to see the resemblence. For one thing Quark is skeevy, black market merchent, who sells drinks, but isn't a drunkard. Sure Ferangi have no respect for women, and have a system worse than the US before Women's Suffrage, but those are cultural influences. Apparently Tigh is a drunkard, who also doesn't respect his wife. However, just because they don't respect women, doesn't mean they're the same.

Tigh is emotionally closed off. In fact, I can't think of one scene in which the fella isn't angsting. He lacks an outlet for his emotions, cause he's the XO, he has to make snap decisions! (IE. Venting the pods, which caused Tyrol to lose 85 of his techs.) He can't show emotion. Because of this he drinks and fights with Starbuck. If Tigh is like anybody its Odo.

Odo is so much into his job it took him forever to let people in, and even then it was only around another shapeshifter and Kira, both of which offered him comfort because Kira is also gung ho about her position and the other shapeshifter is well another shapeshifter. Sure he doesn't drink or beat women like Tyrol. But they're are both emotionally cut off characters.

If Quark is like anybody I'd venture its Gaius. Mostly because during the series Quark bugged out whenever he did something really illegal. Sell the wrong guns to the wrong people and such like. Albeit Quark never allowed an invasion from his bar. They both show guilt for what they've done, yet still keep doing it episode after episode, which makes them fun to watch.

Loved DS9, except for the Bajoran prophet thingy...
They should have skipped those religious stories if you ask me, almost ruined the whole show.

I'd love to see Avery Brooks get some work on BSG. He's an outstanding actor. Brooks isn't getting much dramatic work at all these days.

Avery Brooks is actually teaching acting at Rutger's University.

While he hasn't been on the screen, he has been on stage, most noteably starring as King Lear in Yale Universities production. Also, he's played Oedipus Rex in 'The Oedipus Plays' as part of Washington D.C.'s
The Shakespeare Theater.
