i'm one of those who starts and ends the day with a cigarette. One time, i really tried to quit smoking without going cold turkey (which probably is the best way). What i did was to wait as long as i could after waking up to have my first cig of the day. It started off with about 45 minutes. Within a week, i had worked my way up to 3 hours. After two weeks, 8-10 hours. By the time a month passed, i was up to a whole day. But, like always, i eventually just wanted a damn cigarette when i woke up one day, and that was it--i was back to square one. This is just a suggestion for anybody who wants to try another method. It was working for me until i gave in to my own weak will.

My brother-in-law quit last year. Evidently, there's a drug (prescription, I think, not recreational - before anybody gets any ideas!) available to help one to quit smoking. I asked him last weekend how he kicked the habit (unfortunately, I forget the name of the drug!)

The drug is called Zyban. I tried it, but I didn't like it. I believe it was originally developed as an anti-depressant, but they found that it had the unexpected side effect of reducing nicotine cravings. It made me feel like I was floating, and I found it hard to concentrate or focus when using it, so I stopped. However, some people might like that.

That's the one. I knew I'd remember it if someone mentioned it! I guess it worked ok for my brother-in-law ok, because he's been quit of smoking for at least 6 months.

Only if you have no where to go or no pressing responsibilities. I've had some pretty good colds that have caused me to be in that state, and its just freaky (and then when you add being hopped up on cold meds...makes it even more interesting.)

It made me feel like I do when I have a bad cold and take heavy-duty cold medicine. At the time I tried it, I had a very fast-paced job with multiple deadlines and crushing responsibilities. Hell, I could barely drive when taking Zyban. But, drugs effect different people in different ways, so it may not have the same effect on someone else. The only way to know is to try it.

How's the quitting smoking going? I just quit right around the end of November. I still crave one every now and then, especially when I'm driving. I live near DC so traffic can be a pain at times and I just want one soooo badly. I haven't given in and had one yet.
I did "quit" one other time for about 3 years after I got out of the Navy, but then I started hanging out with smokers again and it went from "hey, can I just bum one of those?" to "gimme a carton of Marlboro Lights stat!" pretty quickly. I have a part-time roomie that smokes so it makes it tough, but so far so good.
I gradually reduced the amount I smoked over the course of two months and then decided on a pack of smokes that would be my last. After that, no more. Good luck to you!!
(It seems so odd that I would choose this thread to be my first post, but eh...I'm craving a cig so I figure it fits)
