And after that "one puff" it's another 6 weeks before it's out of your system again. This is scary. No wonder why it's so hard to quit. i've been smoking probably about as long as Xenu (and kind of looked like him, too, when i first started. BTW, what're you doing with my jacket? ). i sometimes joke that i quit smoking all the time--in between cigarettes. My problem is I like smoking. This is my problem. i'm not sure if i could even start to quit...cold turkey or otherwise. i think ladyrheena has a great idea for those on the board that are trying to quit. It might make for some long, disjointed posts, but if it helps someone to kick the habit, why not. Wouldn't that be interesting?: Not only does Ragnar Anchorage become the #1 sci-fi and #1 BSG site, it also helps people quit smoking. ;D

Why not post on the board every time you feel the need to have a ciggie? That'll keep you busy and we can make this a support thread. I'm all for people giving up. No more nasty yellow fingertips! No more nasty staining of wallpaper and net curtains! Hurrah! One of the keys to quitting smoking is avoiding and/or controlling the "triggers". These are the times and places and situations in which you almost always light up. For some people, it's sitting down at a bar, or starting up the car, or walking out the door after a hard day's work. For me, it's sitting down at my computer at the table in my bedroom. For a couple years, I spent pretty much every evening sitting at this table, typing away on the internet or playing some conquer-the-world computer game, all the while chain-smoking at a prodigious rate. To this day I have a hard time hitting 'end turn' on Civ2 without reaching for a smoke, and the sound of a modem squealing as it dials up AOL makes me reflexively reach for the lighter. When I first quit a year ago, I handled this problem by arranging things so I could plug in my laptop to the power and phone line while lying in bed with the laptop on my chest and the trackball by my side. This helped greatly, since because I'm not terminally stupid, I never smoked in bed. Not being used to smoking in that particular location, it was a lot easier to stop smoking yet keep up my internet addiction. However, it's rather awkward to type in that position, so I cut down on my posting on webforums and writing emails and even changed my game-playing habits away from numeric-keypad-intensive games like Empire Deluxe and Civ2 and towards mouse-only games like X-COM and Medieval Total War. Of course, that shift to an even MORE sedentary lifestyle led to my going up a couple of inches on my waistline. And since I'm currently furiously typing away to get up my post count here on RA and working on my BSG FAQ and episode guide, however, I've moved back to the table. So all the old urges are coming back again. A couple recent relapses didn't help with the effort to stay quit, by reinforcing the subconscious link between sitting at this table and smoking cig after cig after cig. On the other hand, a recent all-night smoking and typing frenzy led to the most productive period of work on my FAQ site yet...and as I'm behind schedule on updating the site, maybe I should go buy a couple more packs...

My mom drank a whole bunch of vodka, smoked four packs and woke up the next morning (well the next afternoon) and never smoked again.

Bravo, then!
Too bad your friends are irritated, though.
I know a couple of people who are 'I-only-smoke-when-I-drink types.
(I didn't mean to sound snooty, my dear.)
