Here are some edited highlights on an RDM interview which was conducted this past December:
Ronald D. Moore on The Current State of Science-Fiction Television, Not An Enterprise Fan
DreamWatch magazine, out in the UK, features an exclusive interview with former STAR TREK writer and producer Ronald D. Moore, in which he talks about his remake of the sci-fi show BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, the state of sci-fi on television and the TREK franchise. Here are a few excerpts :
What do you think of the current state of sci-fi television ?
Moore: I don't think much of most sci-fi TV at the moment. It feels very familiar. I actually don't watch much of it. I'll switch on to other sci-fi series to keep to date to keep up to date with what's going on or my interest level will bring me to watch something, but I just don't see a lot of innovation or anything that really interest me. I like what we're doing here [with GALACTICA] because it's different. It has a different take, a different vibe and a different aesthetic. It's a different form of storytelling. BATTLESTAR GALACTICA is doing what I hoped we would do: it's reinventing science-fiction television.
Do you ever miss working on STAR TREK ?
Moore: Oh sure. I really miss working on DEEP SPACE NINE - I miss the writing staff that I worked with. There was an intense sense of camaraderie. I really enjoyed working with that staff, and I enjoyed working with Ira Behr. I learned a lot from him. I liked the fact that our internal mandate on DEEP SPACE NINE was to challenge everything that was STAR TREK and push the boundaries and continually find ways to reinvent the show or to do something different. It was a very challenging and interesting environment. I miss that and I miss those characters.
What do you think of ENTERPRISE?
Moore: I don't really watch it. I have seen it - I'm not a fan of it. I don't want to criticize it because I don't think that's particularly classy, but I will say it's not really my cup of tea.
Now for my comments:
Have to agree with RDM about Enterprise (I thought Deep Space 9 was the best Trek of the bunch!). After 3.5 seasons, Enterprise is finally finding its way- finally. I think RDM has a shorter time frame to succeed with TNS of Galactica, but based on what I have seen on the new series, he has done just that!
