My Best Scenes review of Kobol's Last Gleaming is up at the Reviews link on the Galactica Station home page too.
Here's a preview:
‘Kobol’s Last Gleaming- Part 1’ is the start of a nice wrap-up to a fantastic season of Battlestar: Galactica. Things come to a head for the crew when the legendary planet of Kobol is found. Laura Roslin believes that she is the one destined to find the way to Earth via Kobol, and enlists the aid of Kara Thrace to use the captured Cylon Raider to retrieve the Arrow of Apollo back on their homeworld of Caprica. According to prophesy, that Arrow will open the tomb of Athena on Kobol, and bring the Galactica one step closer to finding Earth. Of course, the opposing view to Laura’s is that of Commander Adama who does not believe in the existence of Earth and has simply used this information to give his people hope (a false hope—but a hope nonetheless). So one basic inquiry that can be posed is whether the President’s faith will prove to be more accurate than the Commander’s more rational take on events. Personally, this reviewer has always loved it when sci-fi series tackle the ‘faith versus reason’ debate. The first year of Space: 1999 had faith winning out time and time again, especially when it came to the existence of a higher being which allowed the Alphans to survive in the deep reaches of space. Perhaps BSG will adopt this same perspective in future episodes.
The seven-minute intro to the episode is one of the best in the series to date. While a classical music score plays in the background, four scenes gradually unfold: Lee Adama and his father boxing in the gym, Kara Thrace having sex with Lee (?), Helo engaging in a stand-off with the Caprica Sharon, and the Galactica Sharon fingering her gun. The old man does manage to get the upper hand over his son. We find out that Kara has been fantasizing about Lee while making love to Gaius. Helo does shoot Sharon, but hesitates when it comes to delivering the death blow. And the Galactica Sharon does put the gun in her mouth, but then removes it and begins to cry because she cannot complete the suicidal act. These are some powerful moments, and by merging them together on the screen one feels like they are simultaneously watching four chapters in a holo-novel (oops- pardon the Star Trek reference). I was very impressed with the direction of this opening segment.
What I really liked were the scenes between Kara & Gaius, and then Kara & Lee. You can detect the jealousy and other high testosteronic emotions expressed by the two males vying to be the Alpha one around Kara. As Gaius plays cards with Lee, he is almost in the latter’s face when he proudly announces that Lee cannot possibly compete with him (in obvious reference to Kara). When Kara enters and greets Gaius in a familiar fashion, the good doctor even becomes more of a pain-in-the ass by reminding her of his title of Mr. Vice-President and that she should maintain “some measure of decorum” around him at all times. Apparently, he did not like the fact she screamed out Lee’s name when having her orgasm with him.
