I was just wondering if RDM has ever given any indication of how much of the overall plot of the show he has planned in advance, and to what extent he's winging it. What I'm most curious about is if he already has the answers to the show's mysteries--namely, what the Cylons' plan is--worked out. One would hope that the writer would know what their motivation is if one is to be writing for their characters, but you never know. There are a lot of shows in which the writers don't worry about that kind of stuff until they're forced to. On ST: TNG, they would often write the first half of the season cliffhanger without having any idea how it would be resolved.

My guess is he has planned out a lot as he has a multi-year arc for BSG. KR

OK, I watched the series lowdown, but that was at the end of a long day of traveling and I now forget most of what was in it. Plus, at that time, I had not yet been converted into the uber-fan I am now, so I wasn't trying to absorb every nugget of info that I possibly could. But, just out of curiosity, what do you mean by "they showed part of his plan"? You mean they hinted at events in the show that hadn't happened yet (beyond the stuff that happens in Season 1, which must have already been written by the time of the series lowdown)?

www.mediablvd.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=21457&highlight=interview+archiveI made a list of all of Ron D. Moore's pre BattleStar interviews, and I've pretty much read through most of them. Reading them should help you understand his development as a writer, and the road to BattleStar. The impression I get is that he began developing certain themes and ideas during his time on DS9. If you watch some of the stories he wrote for DS9 and compare them with BattleStar, you'll see that the BSG stories are a more evolved and sophisticated take on the themes of his DS9 stories. From RDM's own mouth: Moore : Oh sure. I really miss working on DEEP SPACE NINE - I miss the writing staff that I worked with. There was an intense sense of camaraderie. I really enjoyed working with that staff, and I enjoyed working with Ira Behr. I learned a lot from him. I liked the fact that our internal mandate on DEEP SPACE NINE was to challange everything that was STAR TREK and push the boundaries and continually find ways to reinvent the show or to do something different. It was a very challenging and interesting environment. I miss that and I miss those characters. In fact, he brought over DS9 writers Bradley Thompson and David Weddle. You can see which BSG eps they worked on at any credit site. Now the arc on DS9 was about an outside force sweeping into our homes and rearranging our lives. And a few years later, BSG repeats this theme. DS9 never limited itself to formula. Like BSG, the overall theme was 'it's a big world' 'there are many stories to tell'. Compare that with the limitations of shows like 'West Wing' or 'Soprano's'(2 decent shows). In the BattleStar Universe, group conflict(Sopranos-mafia) and high power(West Wing-presidents) join other subjects like law and Order (Law and Order) and dating(Friends). With that kind of variety, you've got stories for years and years to come. And hiding behind the guise of 'Scifi', he can do that without any controversy. This show can go on endlessly. Because what you're saying is that humans are starting from scratch. Now let's watch the evolution of humans. How long has the human race existed? My guess is that's how long BattleStar is mapped out.

I have a few friends in the TV industry, largely in the post-production area. So, of course, I bug them constantly about the business.
One of the themes that comes up time and time again is the magic 100. Now, I don't know if it is an official rule, or an unofficial rule-of-thumb, but a show needs 100 episodes to get into syndication.
And syndication is where the REAL money is, from a payback standpoint.
My guess would be that, in general terms, there is enough of a story arc to cover 100 episodes.
