I stated the following over at fleets, but I think I was ignored because people still want to use week-by-week ratings to either make an argument for the continuation of BSG or its cancellation. Or they want to understand all the dynamics of ratings- which is next to impossible (in my opinion).
Let me repeat what I said there & hopefully we can generate a good discussion here:
In the final analysis, it comes down to this. Did Sci-Fi have any other show like BSG doing this well in the ratings on Friday night at that time? If not, then BSG is a ratings winner. And if it is doing, on average, better than the Stargates, it has gained an audience in a much shorter period of time. So the show does not need to establish itself among viewers. I think these factors are definitely being considered by Sci-Fi. Now the show, like any other, is going to be constantly evolving. They cannot be necessarily doing the same plots a year from now. Even RDM mentioned he wants to explore the Cylons more. I think this is a very good idea. And the show should veer in more directions while maintaining a particular continuity so as not to lose its core audience. I do not think BSG is in any danger of being cancelled soon. Ratings will be observed very closely at the season finale & premiere episodes of Season 2 (like the first ones in this Season). The good news is there will not be such a long delay between episodes so fans will not "lose interest." KR

Still not seeing any numbers, people!
Which one of the reported numbers is the correct one? 2.2? And what was the share? What was the demographic distribution?

Or they want to understand all the dynamics of ratings- which is next to impossible (in my opinion). Let me repeat what I said there & hopefully we can generate a good discussion here: Noooo! I am going to force your to understand the dynamics of ratings! I agree that it is folly to think they will give it the axe if it is their top performer. I have heard whisperings of cutoff ratings that are uncomfortable close to the national ratings. Hard to determine what was actually meant without knowing which numbers SFC is setting the threshold on. We have a go on season two. Now we have only to fear natural disaster, force majeur, terrorist acts, untimely deaths, or the Rapture. I doubt SFC will pull the plug now, even if there is a down trend for the next few eps. Once the cliffhanger airs in the US, they will get stragglers tuning in for the repeat. So I suppose the ratings do matter less in terms of getting season two, it is already on the drawing board. Season three will depend on the quality and public embrace of season two. Much of the discussion at the other boards is rampant misunderstanding of what the figures mean. I would love to see the share data. KR, maybe you can ask about the share values next time? I thought I had seen a 5 share for one of the eps earlier in the season. Medialife.com has a table that breaks out the top performers in key demographics for ad supported cable. I have seen BSG make those lists recently, but it depends on how well Monk and WWE does in a given week.
