Ok why do the Marines on the ship use P-90s? Wouldn’t they have something more...hi-tech like the gun the pilots use? The gun they use looks like it shots little missiles.

Ok why do the Marines on the ship use P-90s? Wouldn’t they have something more...hi-tech like the gun the pilots use? The gun they use looks like it shots little missiles. Real-world Reason -- For reasons of time and/or money, they couldn't afford to create a rifle equivalent of Helo's sidearm from the miniseries. So they very slightly gussied up some P-90's (perhaps borrowing props from SG-1's producers down the block) as a replacement, hoping the futuristic look of those weapons would satisfy everyone but the sort of gun-obsessed fanboy that both you and I clearly are. Possible Fictional-world Reason -- "Why, the similarity to a weapon used on your Earth is uncanny, but these are the latest Colonial-issue Geminon Arms Alpha-7 model longarms, which have selective armor-piercing and high-explosive anti-personnel fire at up to 785 rounds per centon. State of the art in man-portable firepower!" In other words, they ARE just a scaled-up rifle-sized equivalent of the rocket-firing sidearms the pilots get, they just LOOK like Belgian-made plastic machine pistols in a non-standard caliber.

Well, they don't look entirely like P-90s to me. I think the props team did a good job putting a hunk of mods and junk on it to make it look sci fi looking rather than an exact replica of the Belgian gun.
But I do sorta wish they propped the gun to the extent they did with the Aliens M41A Pulse Rifle. Basically, it was a Thompson sub machine gun propped to death.

I haven't seen anything on the BSG P90s that isn't a real world accessory. The magazines look to be empty, but apart from that they're bog standard P90s. I agree its not hard to do something akin to the M41 with armourer's skills, but I can live with it. I like the Colonial sidearm; very Blade Runner.

There is something I raised before in another thread.
Moore mentioned in an interview I read that this all takes place in a parallel universe, there are recognisable things all over BSG, from lamps to clothes, telephones to weapons, toasters (like the one in my kitchen) to vehicles all easily recognisable. This is intentional, not to save a few pennies - I could make a prop weapon for not much money and without too much imagination. It's intentional because things have evolved in very similar ways in this parallel universe - with *slight* differences. Along with recognisable forms of government, LCD screens, clocks, terracotta statue warriors, galleons, greek Gods, staplers, names, places, microphones and other things too like P90's.
They ARE us, with a twist...
All of this has happened before, and all of this will happen again...

I post on another board where one of the prop guys posts and told us a little about the guns. The rifles are airsoft P90s with accessories thrown on and a few other things to make them look slightly different. The pistol that Helo is carrying is a Glock with some shrowding. He didn't say which Glock model. The smaller sidearms like the one Boomer shot herself in the mouth with appear to be Makarovs with a very small addition to make them look a little different, but I haven't confirmed that. I think they just used P90s because they look futuristic, yet believeable. The explosives firing sidearm is a nod to Blade Runner. The small sidearm, well, Makarovs are cheap and plentiful, so why not?
