I don't care if there is a earth or not...
But for the love of the Gods, DO NOT cheesify any earth like in the old series...
it was a last gasp for ratings that only nailed the coffin shut... if they ever DO get to earth, make it a future earth or something, because everyone knows what would happen if aliens landed today:
the fundamentalists of all religions would try to jihad against them or worship them as gods (neither a very good policy)
and the government would offer them a small town in nebraska to experiment as they wished in exchange for technology...

Ugh, if they do find Earth, I can't think of any denoument that would be satisfying.
If they find present-day Earth, it will indeed be cheesy. It might be interesting to see the exact problems you mention be explored in a thoughtful and rational manner, especially the religious angle (EFC touched on this, but did a poor job IMHO). But the network suits would undoubtedly exert pressure to either turn the show into Galactica 1980 or else do a spinoff series while the original cast perhaps continue on their adventures and lead the Cylons away from Earth.
If they find Earth in the past (an interesting angle as a Twilight Zone-style series finale WHAM! moment), it would be even worse.
If they find a Future Earth with some sort of Star Trek style starfleet, militarized or not, it could go either way. Perhaps we'd get a final season of an epic galaxy-spanning war between the Earth/Colonial alliance (an uneasy alliance, to judge by RDM's tastes in such matters) and the Cylons (which could be cool from a CGI-spectacle standpoint). Done right, that might even be a great potential follow-on series. "Galactica: The Alliance" might join "Stargate Atlantis: The Next Generation" on the Sci-Fi channel's rotating schedule of flog-a-dead-horse series.
Perhaps they'll get to Earth to find it already wiped out by the Cylons. This would be another Twilight Zone-esque tragic ending.
Perhaps they'll get to Earth and find that it was Earthlings acting as the Cylon Gods. There MIGHT be a fun way to handle this, but I can't think of one.
Perhaps they'll get to Earth and find it a nuked-out cinder from WW3. Another bad Twilight Zone moment, methinks.
But I get the sinking feeling that they'll never get to Earth, that they'll end up setting up a nifty cliffhanger on some future season only to get cancelled by the Sci-Fi channel without the opportunity to tie up the loose ends. Perhaps then, a couple of years later, we'd get another miniseries or TV-movie like Farscape and B5 did, which will only leave us puzzled and raise more new questions than it answers.

I don't think earth exists, they'll end up back at Caprica after going in one huge loop, they'll find Helo sat outside a log cabin with 6 screaming cylon kids... ;D ;D ;D

IMHO I think it would be cool if it was the Cylons we see making 'first contact' with Earth (and here comes the Twilight Zone twist).
There they are, 6, Doral and Leoban interrogating this seemingly poor slob, who suddenly starts almost hysterically laughing at them.
Leoban: "What are you laughing at?” raising his hand to slap the man again.
Six: "No, let him answer!” grabbing Leoban's wrist.
Doral: “Yes, let him answer.”
Man: “Ha, ha, ha. I’m more like you than you could ever possibly realise!”
The man stands up at an inhuman speed (Matrix style), punching Doral and sending him halfway across the room, then turns to Leoban and hits him with an open palm into the chest, which lifts Leoban off the floor and sends him across the room to hit the wall about halfway up. He then turns on Six grabbing her by the throat and picking her up (Darth Vader style).
Man: “Do you really think that you’re the only artificial entities ever created? If you do you’re greatly mistaken!”
A snap is heard and the man drops Six’s lifeless body to the ground.
Fade to black, end credits.

I have some ideas for earth: 1.) They find an old space probe. It is Pioneer 10 and it is very very old. The probe contains a gold plaque which shows the Colonials that the probe was build by humans: www.craigmont.org/skymedia/plaque.jpgwww.craigmont.org/pioneer10.htm They decide to jump to the coordinates which are on the plaque. The earth is no more a legend. They find earth but earth is a dead planet. It is a desert. The Colonials find out that earth was a oasis but the people on earth destroy themselves. They pollute the atmosphere and the oceans and then the climate changed fatally. It was to late when they noticed what they had done and the people on earth died. The pollute atmosphere made the earth to a dead and dark desert. The Colonials must find a new planet when they will survive... 2.) They find earth but another species was faster than the Colonials: The Cylons. They found earth on their hunt for the Galactica. All people on earth were killed by the Cylons. 3. They find earth but there is no trace of a human civilization. The earth is an oasis of life but brief time after the Colonials jumped to earth the Cylons appear and the final battle of survival begins.... At the last scene we see the line: Cylon occupied Earth

I think that when the series (TV shows AND movies?) comes to it's end they will find, like someone peviously mentioned, something directing them to Earth & that will be it. They should NEVER show them actually getting there. I would be silly. I hope they find one of our deep space probes that wandered out of our solar system & they know from its markings & construction that it came from us. Then they can all rejoice & celebrate! Maybe have them make audio contact with the international space station or something or someone can make a forward jump ahead of the fleet & come back with long range scans showing Earth. I hope that if they do happen to show Earth, that it is a future Earth & we are not freaked out by it & try to start an interstellar war. If some a-hole like W is in charge of the U.S. that would be the likely scenario!

What if they find Earth via a Forward scout such as a Raptor. They hide behind the moon or somewhere near it, and run scans to determine what Earth is like. Finding that Earth is not as technologically advanced as they are, they decide to leave, so as not to lead the cylons to Earth. The series ends with Adama saying something like, "we can not condem our brothers to our fate, so we must continue to search for a refuge and rebuild our civilization. Perhaps in time, we can return and join our brothers on Earth, but now is not the time." Fade to black and the series ends.
Kind of cheesey, but I think it would work.

Well I think the low-tech earth isn'T the best way for the series end.
Maybe they will make a movie to end the series. Something like they plan for Stargate SG-1....
By the way, I prefer some pessimistic version of earth.

The idea about Cylon-occupied Earth smacks a leetle too much of Planet of the Apes to me but that one's a good one. What about taking it a step further and having Earth as some kind of giant polluted slum- not dead, which is bad, but gasping its last, which is worse, and then seeing the Colonials' reactions to the actual state of their paradise? Okay, I'm a sucker for apocalyptic storylines, but it'd be an interesting plot twist.

The only problem with having Earth found as a hellhole is that Colonial society is strikingly similar to contemporary Western Culture. They should have had the exact same kind of problems on Caprica or Geminon or wherever.

No, I was thinking a step up (or rather a step down) from the 'usual' problems of Westernised culture. A point where the environmental problems have taken such a tight hold that the planet can no longer really provide basic resources, leading to a collapse of government, organised civilisation and the general reign of chaos. Sort of...ummm...as if the entire planet is one big technological slum town, riddled with street gangs, or something. Sort of a planetwide Escape From New York, if you can envision that. Okay, now my fanfiction writer's sense is tingling ( )but I just have a clear mental image of that situation and the Colonials' reaction. Shame I can't plug my twisted brain in somewhere and download it so everyone else can see. Although on second thoughts that might scare too many people. ;D

Ok but what is when the Colonies hadn't cars or others vehicles which polute the atmosphere. The vehicles could be powered by Solium or Tylium and these things could be very environment-friendly ? Nobody said that the Hummer H1 we saw in "Act of Contrition" was powered by a fuel that isn't environment-friendly. It could be a Solium powered Hummer. Maybe the Colonials noticed the pollution earlier as an danger than we people on earth.

I see where you're coming from, ladyrheena, but most shows that depict evironmental devastation can't resist getting preachy with the whole, "If we don't change our ways, this is what will happen!" It's been done for decades and has really become a tired cliche. OTOH, depicting it how you describe, if it were ambiguous as to how it happened could be really intriguing and fun to see.
Apollo, environmental damage is caused by more than just Hummers and automobiles. Their culture is so similar to ours that they hold press conferences, summits, and have "debate shows" like Crossfire or McNeil/Lerher. Their ideas of governmental systems are virtually identical to ours. Their drain on resources is impressive, even with rationing in place. With so many similarites between our cultures, you'll have a hard time convincing me that they are somehow magically environmentally friendly.

If they finally do reach Earth, I think it would be a good twist if they come across a society which is as technologically advanced but has embraced aftifical intelligence and not gone to war with it. The colonial fleet has been decimated in a final battle with the pursuing cylons with only the Galactica and a few ships remaining. With no hope left , the fleet finally stumbles upon Earth, it's a miracle!. Adama and Roslin meet with the leaders of Earth at an assembly of the United Nations building. Adama shakes hands with the President of the United States who introduces him to his very helpful assistant, "She's great isn't she, an android by the way, wonderful inventions don't you think? Have you got any of those by any chance?"
