I just watched this episode, and I'm somewhat aware of his original rallying cry to TOS faithfuls NOT to endorse TNS.
Is it only me, or are the writers playing a big joke on Hatch, or he realised the irony in the script for him to play the leader of a terror group, that for the sake of ideals almost dooms everybody? I enjoyed the episode for what it was, but knowing some of real life backstory, this is just too funny.
Bear with me here.
The scriptwriters portray Zarek as a misguided idealist. To paraphrase Terry Pratchett, we are all in the same boat. We may occasionally try to push each other off but no one doubts the journey is important. Only a lunatic would drill a hole in the bottom.
For the sake of bringing power to the people, he initially starts off prepared to risk everyone's wellbeing, but is eventually convinced to "wait and see" and cooperates with the current government.
If the colonists journey is viewed as the series being revived, then Hatch fits right in. He was originally prepared to call for TOS fans to boycott TNS in the hopes of getting it cancelled (and was a leader of sorts of these folk, just like Zarek) , he was very angry (according to his documented comments) that a continuation was not being made and the fans were not being listened to, and that they SHOULD be listened to (gasp, no democracy). He was in fact, prepared to jeorpadize any chance of Galactica ever being remade if it was not on his terms.
In the end he has been convinced to come aboard the good ship TNS.
The fact that they convinced him to play THIS role makes it an incredibly ironic joke (if you're not fan of TOS, that is).
If you extend the interpretation, the scriptwriters view TOS diehards as a bunch of rabid louts that have their purposes and can be made to see the light. Some fruitcakes, however, haven't had their fix in 20 years (that's a year count that's specifically mentioned, why 20, I wonder) and need to be put down. Hee hee hee.
