Listening to the commentary on the mini series dvd...I have to say that it actually makes me think *less* of the new series. Part of it, is that they are just really too pleased with themselves, particuarly every time they said "...usually sci-fi, it's *this* way, but we were so clever, that we changed it and did it *this* new cool way. The other thing, was that the producer said that they made Rosalin the civilian boss, to create tension that didn't exist in the old series...but if you know the old series, you know that those people like Ray Milland in the opening pilot, and in other episodes, where the counsel-types were doing their best to cause problems for the military. I still appreciate the new series, and I'm supporting it, but the combination of re-watching the original series, watching the Lowdown, and listening to the commentary actually as decreased it somewhat. Ah well Spass

I took their chatter back and forth for enthusiasm, not arrogence or bragging about their clever efforts.
And after all the flack those three have taken I think it was kind of refreshing to hear that they have any enthusiasm left.
As for the Roslin/tension issue - I think that they were trying to create a more personal type of tension between Roslin and Adama ( a struggle of personalities types) rather than a more general military vs. the civil governing body (and apparently it seems that they also wanted the tension to be more believable, with Roslin being a true challenge to Adama in the eyes of the audience).

I think they are just really proud of their work. They were in a difficult position really. If they copied to much they would have been slated by some and they have been slated by some for what they have done. I think they have done a top job.

Writers, producers, and directors, even actors most of them have very big egos. Yes, at times they seemed to be gloating and basking in the glow of their genius, but I hear the same thing on commentaries all the time, in fact, in many ways it is their time to shine.
However, I agree that it can be a little too much at times, Joss Whedon comes to mind as being a self-indulgent during commentaries.

I think it's fine to be proud of a result...but you can be proud without being too self-congratulatory...particuarly in light of the fact that the new BSG is really hanging on a thread still, there is no guarantee of a 2nd year, and unless it gets decent ratings on Sci-Fi, it might be doomed.
Hopefully that won't be the case.
