I might be reading too much into this (or, heaven forbid, someone else has already read too much into this and I've managed to miss the thread) but has anyone else noticed in the miniseries that Apollo's uniform patch displays the emblem for the Galactica? Now I would have thought he'd be wearing the badge of whatever base ship he's assigned to- in the scene I took the cap from the conversation about receiving orders makes it clear that he ISN'T assigned to the Galactica. So how come he's got that on his jacket? Is it not his jacket? ("Hey, Kara, and while I'm here can I borrow your coat? Left mine at home.") Did he get a new jacket just for the decomissioning ceremony? Or am I being vastly obssessive over this, completely misinterpreting the significance of the badge and ought to be slapped for spending too much time staring at Jamie Bamber's arms?

His mum knitted it for him so that he would fit in with the Galactica kids and they wouldn't bully him. Unfortunately, he wore pikey knock-off trainers from the market and was stupid enough to say that he wanted to see the blue goldfish in the toilets so they spilled his milk and stole all his penny chews anyway.
*nods wisely*
I apologise to anyone who found that completely incoherent and also for being totally off-topic there. Well, kinda off-topic. Non-sensical, anyway.

There there, Crashdown. If you're not going to slap me then I won't complain. *backs away slowly*

Good catch! I think that they could explain this away by saying that while Galactica was not his home base he was assigned to it for T.A.D. (temporary additional duty). Therefore, while he was onboard the Galactica he was no longer assigned to his old unit but to the Galactica and its Viper squadron.
They actually would have replaced his patches because the military wants uniformity, in fact, I think that he would have been required to wear the new patch.

Actually TAD orders almost never require you to change your unit patches...unless its long term, more likely just a goof.

I was just thinking of a way to explain it. Lee arrived in a Viper so unless they have a cargo hold for luggage or his uniform arrived by other means, he might have had to use a uniform available onboard.

When he arrives aboard Galactica he is wearing a flight suit with "Viper" patches but no unit patch.
Remember that his appearance was supposed to be a PR publicity photo shoot with his dad, so it kinda makes sense they would have some photo-op uniform ready for him.

And I would guess the Galactica patch would be something like a rare stamp at that point -- he has the chance to get a legit Galactica patch, of course he's going to go for it.

I want to know if it's possible to purchase some of those patches. That'd be COOL. Not the average Scout blanket fare, methinks.

Has anybody considered the possibility that the patches were sewed on/used because the Galactica was being retired and Apollo was temporarily assigned to the Galactica for the ceremonies? And they probably wanted all military personel to wear Galactica patches and insignia as a final tribute and honor. Too bad they didn't show a few retired veterans or people that previously served aboard the Galactica at the ceremonies. That could have added more impact to those scenes.
