Here is a snippet from Brit Sci-Fi Mag SFX
"How long have we been waiting for a show like the new Battlestar Galactica? While the X-Files and now Lost have made SF palatable to mainstream audiences, the reason why they have popular appeal is beacsue to a large extent they're not too overtly SF. Being Earth based, they're easier for the casual phaser-phobic channel flicker to hook into.
Battlestar Galactica though, is the first unashamed space opera - complete with spaceships and robots - to embrace the kind of storytelling techniques and camerawork beloved of 'mature' US TV like the West Wing and The Sopranos.
Firefly was part way there and, arguably, it's the better show, with a broader range of tones and textures, effortlessly moving from homour to drama, while Galactica is a tad unrelentingly overwrought, But Firefly's planet hooping jaunts and Western-style hijinks could give casual viewers the impression that is was far less than serious.
Battlestar Galactica looks serious. The actors look serious, the Direction looks serious, Hell even the corridors look serious.
Rating out of 5 stars....

Firefly couldn't carry BSG's jockstrap.
BSG rocks, plain and simple. It has real characters that you actually care about. Ed Olmos is such a powerful lead that he makes everyone around him better. The whole cast works hard and they deliver a top of the line performance. The special effects are unique and really well done. The only people that don't like this are either not fans of sci fi or the ones that wanted to see another version of the old show. The old show sucked. Starbuck was the only cool character in the show, and the Cylons were a joke. You certainly can't say that about the new series.

Firefly couldn't carry BSG's jockstrap. ... The special effects are unique and really well done. Out of curiosity, did you actually ever see Firefly? Or are you trying to be ironic? Battlestar Galactica took the same CG effects crew that they used over on Firefly and had them do the same thing again. Interestingly enough, I noticed in another thread that you said: I can't wait to actually see it on t.v. instead of just reading about it. Which kind of implies… no, in fact I would say that it infers that you haven’t seen Battlestar Galactica either. All of which kind of makes me wonder how you can possibly compare the two. … unless you have powers of course. Wouldn’t want to mess with a fella with oogly powers.
