THE BEST SCENES IN EPISODE 1.05
"You Can't Go Home Again"
Let me start out this review by saying ‘You Can’t Go Home Again’ is an excellent conclusion to ‘Act of Contrition.’ This is as much a character-driven story as it is a special effects one. And some original series Galactica fans out there might notice some nods to the ‘Hand of God’ and ‘Return of Starbuck’ episodes.
If the viewer recalls, Kara ‘Starbuck’ Thrace took on eight Cylon raiders by herself and in so doing, sent her Viper on a tail spin towards a moon. At the last possible second, she ejected from the cockpit and…. Well, fortunately, her parachute opened and saved her life. One of the most gripping, opening scenes is her body being dragged away and we don’t know by who (or what for that matter). It is only after a good minute that we discover the howling winds have caught the folds of her parachute and her—rather than a Cylon or some other possible beastie!
The dialogue between Adama and those he interacts with is fascinating to behold. It’s almost as if he regrets how he treated Kara and wants to make amends, even if it means risking the entire fleet to rescue her. Some of the best exchanges occur with Colonel Tigh. He constantly has to tell his subordinate that they are “going to find the missing pilot and bring her home.” Tigh, who is recovering from his own demon (i.e., alcoholism), eventually develops some backbone and points out to Adama that they are putting their own people at risk. He is relieved of duty by the Commander, but interestingly the perspective has changed here. Now it is Tigh who is the voice of reason, and Adama who is reacting emotionally.

THE BEST SCENES IN EPISODE 1.06
"Litmus"
Ron Moore continues to deliver powerful episodes, and ‘Litmus’ is no exception. After a Cylon terrorist attack by a Doral copy aboard the Galactica, Adama decides to let his people know- once and for all- that the Cylons resemble humans and that they can be anywhere within the fleet. A paranoia slowly creeps into the populace, and both Chief Tyrol and Commander Adama become the victims of a McCarthy –like tribunal headed by Sergeant Hadrian We never know for sure if Hadrian is a Cylon, but that’s the genius of Moore to keep us guessing.
The best scenes of ‘Litmus’ are also those with the best dialogue. Four of them will be mentioned here: 1) the conversation on the phone link between Adama and Roslin just before they go public with the information on the Cylons, 2) Hadrian’s interrogation of Adama, 3) Adama’s beratement of the Chief, and 4) Tyrol’s moment with Sharon at the close of the episode. As the dialogue is an integral part of each scene, it will be reproduced here in its entirety.
With respect to the Adama-Roslin interaction, the President delivers some very effective lines to the Commander, including the following: “There’s a price to be paid when asking for the public’s help. They’re going to demand at the very least that someone be held accountable. Someone who screwed up!….Independent tribunal, openness, transparency—it all sounds great. But after 20 years in political office, I’m telling you these things have a way of inflicting damage on the people you least expect. I do not want a witch-hunt on our hands.” And as ‘Litmus’ proceeds, we find out that Adama should have listened to Roslin more closely. But then again, the military mind operates on control and procedure. It probably never occurs to Adama that the civilians entrusted to him have been pretty battered up as a result of their flight from the Cylons. They are scared to death and desire most of all good news- not bad. That Adama puts one of his most competent officers, Seargeant Hadrian, in charge of the tribunal turns out to be one of his biggest mistakes. Hadrian shows no mercy in getting to the truth, even if it means going to the very top to finding those responsible for the terrorist attack.
