The precise reasons for cancelling excellent shows are almost never given by the networks. i read a news article the other day that said 99.8% of the complaints received by the FCC (the Federal Communications Commission, for those outside the U.S.) in 2003 were from one group, the Parents Television Council, an activist organization. Believe it or not, these complaints are usually acted out on. Some uptight grandma might've seen something on a show she didn't like and, poof, the show is gone. At least, in America.  |

We have our own uptight individuals and groups here too. Our television is generally more liberal than yours however. Nipplegate would have hardly got a mention here. We had a weekly soap that showed naked women every episode and that aired ten years (or more) ago. Our networks just seem to have a distinct hatred of SCI-FI. If it's not a police show (law and Order) or happen in a hospital, then forget it. One or two ep's and it's buried in the midnight or later slot.  That being said, we have recieved a glut of O.C. type shows recently. Now generally I like American TV but this stuff sux.  Please, Americans on this board, write to your networks and complain. You should actively campaign for this act of cruelty to Australians cease immedialty.  |

i hate to tell you this, but most American tv sucks! It's all "reality" shows: everything from those Survivor-type shows to "we'll clean you house for you if you let us make you look like an ass on national tv".  i'm sorry, tv suits, but if i want reality, i'll go outside! i offer my apologies, Moss, but America has very little to offer as far as quality viewing right now.  |

The reality strain (like a viral strain) happens here too. We even have an Aussie QEFTSG starting soon.
There is good American TV out there though. BSG, Tru Calling, Third Watch (love this show), SG1 and West Wing I never miss.

I don't know how it works in Australia, but over here the industry relies on Nielsen research, which involves watchers reporting what they're watching. As far as I know, there are not little eyeballs in the television watching to see if you're in front of it, reporting back what you're watching, and otherwise totally being weird and scary. No. Instead, Nielsen sends out a package, including a viewing journal, and you fill it out and send it in. How do I know this? Aside from it's widely available information? I was a Nielsen viewer. ...No matter how many bums are in how many seats (that makes a funny image in an American's head, I tell you), that won't matter unless they are all literally being counted. And for your sake, I hope that's not the case. You not downloading the show makes exactly zero difference on any metric of observation according to your broadcasters, I can just about guarantee you that. As long as you still report that you watched it if asked, and maybe support the show by sending postcards to the advertisers and the network, your martyrdom is somewhat unnecessary. i was a Nielsen-er, too, for a week. If we could download it, i'm sure other Nielsens could. i know that that's what the producers are worried about, not my little 'ol uncounted sorry bum. So i guess you could count me as another martyr. (Plus downloading videos or music that hasn't come here yet kinda creeps me out )Me and my friends are treating it more like waiting for Christmas, or getting together to watch the Superbowl.  i agree that some of the best things we can do are to report that we're watching it and support the advertisers. Also, for Chalcedony: Do you know of anyone ever becoming a Nielsen household more than once? Ours came too late to help the mini when it aired. |

I'll back up what caseOrange says, "most" American TV really blows at this point in time!!!! These "reality" shows are the worst! You put a camera in the mix & the reality stops! I personally NEVER watch our regular broadcast channels & usually stick to basic cable networks. Star Trek : Enterprise is the ONLY broadcast net show that I watch!
The Discovery Channel is all about motorcycles & cars & crap, TLC is all home-improvement crap, & whenever I turn on the History Channel it is always about Hitler!! I don't even need to bring up the garbage that ABC, CBS, NBC, & the others have on, that crap should speak for itself! It is all due to the Dumbing Down that is happening in our once great country! When a STUPID USELESS WHORE like Paris Hilton can get her own show & get people to watch, it should say something about us!
That is why I am so crazy about the "New & Improved" BSG!! It is, beside ST:ENT, the best show in this country in years! I have a very good friend who is English here & he has digi cable & when I go to his house I'm always watching BBC America because it is a fresh change from our homegrown crap!!
I am so freakin' pumped about getting BSG TNS this coming January so I can have something to look forward to each week. I hope that it gets stellar ratings so we can get at least 4 seasons out of it! If the series runs for at least 100 eps it will most likely be reran in syndication.
And I will also respect the producers wishes & not download their fine show, I will wait with baited breath for the premiere this January!
