Okay, as I was looking at the scifi site today for the deleted scenes fromt he latest ep, I came across this which ahd just been posted there (and appears to now be psoted on the main site of this site as well): Total Vipers: 26 operational, 13 being repaired. Total Pilots: 21. (It does not make it clear whether this number includes the pilots currently being trained, or the ones currently in scibkay). I have to say...looking at those appalling numbers...if I were Apollo at that point, I'd be very tempted to go and ask Colonel Tigh where he's keeping his stash of booze, and whether he'd share any with me!

The number of Vipers is one of their least problems. Just feeding a fleet that size is going to take all of their resources. Two episodes back the president gave a speech in a well kept lawn with grass and hedges on board one of the ships in the fleet. Give me a break. That would have been converted to grow food as soon as it was made operational. Also there would be a few other things that they would have to do such as:
1) Birth control would be illegal. 2) Everyone would become a vegitarian 3) Dirt and Seeds would become the new "currency." 4) Eveyone would be trained in new jobs and have more than one job. 5) The smoking doctor would be training medical students as quickly as he could. 6) A draft would have to be imposed.

I think they will probably touch on some of these topics in the second season, espically the food issue. Though now that they are at Kobol I wouldnt be surprised if they plant some seeds. With the smoking Doctor, id be more worried about him running out of smokes! Jason

Lets face it they need an influx of Vipers ASAP, hopefully this will be addressed early in S2. Maybe Starbuck finds a stash back on Caprica.

It would be sad if the smoking doctor died of lung cancer before he could train anyone else.

#1: Actually, given their limited supplies, I don't see #1 happening. They don't want an uncontrolled population explosion, they have to make sure they continue a sustainable rate of growth. Not to mention that no matter what happened in the rest of the fleet, on Galactica it wouldn't only certainly not be illegal, it would most likely be required (before the Cylon attack as well, but definitly now...taking this thread back to the Vipers issue, for instance, they only have a set number of pilots. They can't afford for any of them to get pregnant.)
#5: God, I certainly hope so. Smoking or no smoking nonwithstanding, that man should be working his tail off to train new medical professionals.

I can see Viper pilots being allowed to use birth control, but no one else. They have nine months to deal with their current situation. If the supply problem is critical at that point, a few extra mouths at that point won't make that much of a difference. It's like in real life, if you wait until you can afford to have a child, you'll never have a child.
Wife swapping may also have to become popular to ensure a strong genitic mix in the population.
They would also have trouble justifying the manufacture of birth control devices, given their limited resources it would be more profitable for the fleet to invest in other industries. Such as food production.
Replacement parts are also going to be a huge problem. They just can't go down to Radio Shack and pick up some components. They'd have to salvage every part of a damaged viper. They may end up picking up parts from Cylons.
The show hasn't addressed these issues, and it probably should.

Galactica almost certainly already has such things on board (unless they jetissoned all their BC along w/ their ammunition in the mini ;D ). That said, they probably won't be distributing it to the fleet as a whole--they'll keep it for their own usage. They're shorthanded already (Vipers pilots just being the most extreme example, but by far not the only one), they need everyone they have. Oh yeah, they're going to have a hard time with replacement parts. First step after running through their avaliable parts will probably be to cannibalize one or two Vipers to get replacement parts to fix the others...and hey, if they need Raptor parts...well, assuming they can ever get to it, maybe something will be salvagable off that one that crash-landed on Kobol... I'd be very very wary of stealing parts from the Cylons, however, beyond the most basic things like, say, the tyllium they made off with in "Hand of God"....If it was suggested to use Cylon electronics, I'd veto that idea immeidatly because I'd be afraid of it potentially giving the Cylons the ability to track us....

You also have to wonder how many Raptors they have left.
I can't see it being more than 10-- and they just lost 2.
It would be interesting in the second season if Galactica located something like "space boneyard" where the Colonial Fleet has warehoused old vipers and various other small ships (like Raptors).
I was thinking something along the lines of a large space born wharehouse facility.

If they've already discovered Kobol, then they're way beyond where anyone else has been in the last two thousand years. Unless they encounter the Pegasus, they're on their own.
It would be cool if they discovered people still living on Kobol who didn't leave when it was evacuated.
