Will we see a surge of "Coming This Fall" previews of (Insert buzzword here) gritty, edgy, dark, human Sci-fi dramas? I am just wondering if this will catch on. I am sure that some studio executive who has never had an original thought in his/her life has a wanabe BSG's in the works…stay tuned.

C'mon...you don't wanna see a "dark, gritty" remake of Jason of Star Command ?

I am rooting for a remake of "Pigs in Space" as a character-driven, searing drama. ;D

I am sure that some studio executive who has never had an original thought in his/her life has a wanabe BSG's in the works…stay tuned. Lol. Actually, it'd be far more synchronicitous if the success of BSG inspired George Lucas to produce a genuinely gritty, edgy, dark, human, well written, well acted Star Wars film. If you accept that the original SW was the catalyst that got the original BSG on the screen, it'd be a nice symmetry if the revitalised BSG prompted something approaching a return to form for fatso. Not going to happen, but a nice thought nevertheless.

I am rooting for a remake of "Pigs in Space" as a character-driven, searing drama. ;D Mmmm....pan-seared pork chops.... But seriously, I for one would be ecstatic if BSG inspired a raft of imitators. Think of the possibilities! Buck Rogers in the 25th Century: This time, we see the real difficulties a man from our era would have in adjusting to a future as removed from us as we are from Shakespeare. I'm thinking they'd crib some bits from "The Forever War"... Battle Beyond the Stars: Just imagine the possibilities for character interaction in a motley crew of mercenaries who aren't actually getting paid... Lost In Space: Just imagine how annoying Dr. Smith would have been if he had constant visions of a lingerie model who tried to argue theology during sex? Quantum Leap: Al is now a chip in Scott Bakula's head (hey, he's available again...), and...well, let's just say that Al is now played by one of the guys from Queer Eye... Back to the Future: Marty and George McFly now have major father-son angst issues they need to work on. Doc Brown has been hitting the booze again. Biff is now a butch lesbian, for no apparent reason, but is somehow even scarier than before. I'm sure we can think of some more series that could use a re-imagining treatment...

Space 1999 would be GREAT if it got updated and turned all grown-up. I still love the original version of that show but a re-make'd be cool.
I suspect that there're almost inevitably going to be BSG imitations in the future. It's set a new standard for the genre to aspire to and with the viewing figures we're getting it's got to be only a matter of time before some exec thinks 'hey, I want one of those...'

It's set a new standard for the genre to aspire to and with the viewing figures we're getting it's got to be only a matter of time before some exec thinks 'hey, I want one of those...' I like your way of thinking! A new version of Space 1999 would rule! Though for obvious reasons, they'd have to change the title (was I the only one who kept a weather eye on the moon around the time it was supposed to go?! Yes, I am a ditz! ;D) and do something about the uniforms etc... oh the nostalgia of youth As for BSG imitators... If it stays on Sci-fi, I doubt it. We're talking tv execs here! Not exactly the brightest bulbs in the ceiling and besides... them watch something on a cable channel?! If it moves over to the parent network NBC and takes off the way we all know it should... then yes, I can see it happening! I mean, even over ten years down the line (yes, it really has been THAT long!) since the X-files started, it's spawning imitators. There was a show that is being piloted in the states, about a scientist and a priest that sounded so X-filesish that it was... spooky! So who knows... we'll have to see. Though let's be honest - money is going to be an issue... would execs rather spend x amount on a new reality tv show or spend y (x times 3) and produce a new, innovative drama that will be the delight of audiences, critics and advertisers alike? I think we know the answer to that one....

Do you know how much I would give to see a Battle Beyond the Stars remake/sequel/anything? In fact, screw BSG...gimme John-boy and the boobie-ship, baby!

They can keep their grubby hands off Battle Beyond The Stars if I have anything to do with it. The original's a classic, and to remake it in a serious, non-camp style would spoil it, IMVHO. ;D
Of all the possible candidates, Space: 1999 would seem to offer the most potential for the gritty/dark/human(etc.) interplay that has become newBSG's trademark, but then that's not surprising as the underlying premise is almost exactly the same.
As to what I'd like to see remade with modern production values, has anyone mentioned Blake's 7 yet?

There has been chatter about a B7 revival.
It seems that the fans were such unreasonable jerks about some things that the team that was going to do it had to close down the forum, and then some contractual messiness killed it for a while.
Last rumor I heard about that was some kind of continuation set in a distant future.
WHo was the chick in the last seasons of Farscape that looked like a hot, reimagined Servilan?

Again that's another one I wouldn't want touched. For all its faults, TLS is a landmark in modern moviemaking.
It was ultimately a pretty cheap tale with perfunctory writing, but it has a naive charm (much like Battle Beyond the Stars') to it that would probably be lost if it was redone "properly".
