Like Alan, I read a couple of BSG books way back when I was about 12 or 13! I also used to like BSG TOS! That was before I had taste! LOL!
Anyway, I too think some sort of canon should be started, but I want to completely disregard TOS!! It was the SEVENTIES, for Christ's sake! Almost everything in that era was CHEESE! Look, I know that a lot of TOS fans will throw stuff at me for saying that, but it is the cold, hard truth! I was a HUGE fan of TOS in the beginning, but I was 12 years old... I will watch the TOS pilot "movie" when they play it on SCIFI Channel just for nostalgic reasons, but I am constantly snickering at the crappy SFX, the campy dialogue, & the mediocre acting of much of the cast. I'm not trying to insult the hardcore TOS fans, but COME ON, TNS is way better! I was originally not going to watch the mini, for I had heard about the "sex changes" & "ethnic changes" of certain characters, but I sucked it up & quite simply watched one of the FINEST FILMS I HAD EVER SEEN! It was so compelling that I wanted everyone to see it! My 2 closest friends had their significant others watch it & they dug it! I hardly know any women who saw or liked TOS! But they loved TNS because it had something for everyone.
I'm sorry for rambling, but in a nutshell, I feel that canon should start with the modern storyline. We have a much more interesting & complex product to work with! These "redesigned" characters have true human flaws, their lives are almost like our own in that they have fears & feelings that we can really relate to. I think that TOS should NEVER be forgotten because it was the "template" for a great & epic story but it was not the best product, because I believe that no matter what Glen Larson said, I feel that TOS was created in the wake of the Star Wars success to capture some of that fat cash that was being generated by the resurgence of the scifi genre. I think that due to limited technolgy & funds by the network this story was never given its justice by the creators! It appeared to be "rushed" into production. TNS is the result of having the stones to go back to the original script & make the changes that needed to be done. I'm glad that we will see Richard Hatch a bit in TNS but I think he's mental in still wanting to do the TOS story to this day.
Canon should start with TNS, & maybe we'll be lucky to see 5 to 7 seasons, & maybe a workable spinoff or 2 down the road! Star Trek did it, & I think the new BSG will follow the same path.
